Washington, DC - February 24, 2025

On a day filled with solemn prayerful remembrance and unwavering resolve, the Ukrainian-American community gathered at the iconic Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale, genocidal war against Ukraine. With the majestic statue of President Abraham Lincoln - a symbol of freedom, unity, and justice - standing as a witness, thousands of Ukrainian Americans, Ukrainians by birth, Ukrainians by choice, and friends of Ukraine from around the world came together in a powerful demonstration of solidarity, faith, and determination.

The event, organized by leading Ukrainian organizations including United Help Ukraine, US Ukrainian Activists, Razom for Ukraine, Ukraine House, People of Ukraine, Nova Ukraine, and the Honorary Consulate of Ukraine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Embassy of Ukraine in the United States of America stood as a testament to the global community's unwavering support for Ukraine’s struggle for freedom and justice.

The program was led by Michael Sawkiw, President of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, who spoke passionately about the unity and resilience of the Ukrainian people. Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, Oksana Markarova, addressed the crowd with words that stirred the hearts of all present:

“Today, traditionally, a mass rally is held near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., dedicated to the 3rd anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Representatives of the Ukrainian community who came to Washington from different states - Ukrainians by birth and Ukrainians by choice - all our friends and partners from around the world who support our struggle for the victory of freedom and a just peace - came to support Ukraine! Together, we send a clear message to the world: Ukraine stands strong because freedom-loving people everywhere stand with Ukraine. The people of Ukraine will never bow to tyranny. We are deeply grateful to the United States - its people, its government, and every American who believes in freedom - for standing with us in this righteous struggle. The support of the United States gives us hope, strength, and the confidence that justice will prevail.”

Her words, filled with gratitude and patriotism, echoed the deep appreciation Ukraine holds for the unwavering support from the American people and government.

The rally was graced by the presence of His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, spiritual father of the Western Eparchy and President of Consistory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Academic Dean of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary. Traveling to Washington, DC, with seminarians from St. Sophia Seminary, Archbishop Daniel was accompanied by Rev. Fr. David Chidzhokie, Rev. Fr. Maksym Zhuravchyk, and Protodeacon Ihor Mahlay, who all stood united in prayer and solidarity.

Archbishop Daniel opened the rally with a moving prayer and address delivered in both Ukrainian and English, reminding all gathered of the spiritual and moral duty to stand for truth and justice:

“As people of God, we stand united in prayer. We bow our heads seeking the protection of the Almighty for Ukraine, and we lift our hearts praying for peace - but not just any peace - a just peace. Ukraine did not choose this war; it was attacked. Ukraine defends not only its land but the values of freedom and dignity cherished by all humanity. We cannot make deals with evil. We must stand against evil, stand for justice, stand for peace founded on truth and righteousness.”

His words resonated deeply, calling upon the international community - and especially the leadership of the United States - to stand firm against tyranny and oppression.

In one of the most poignant moments of the rally, Archbishop Daniel, on behalf of His Beatitude Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, presented the "Bravery Cross" medal to Andriy Smolensky, an indomitable Ukrainian war veteran currently undergoing rehabilitation in Washington, DC.

Andriy’s presence and testimony about the horrors of Russian war crimes served as a stark reminder of the human cost of freedom. His courage inspired all gathered, and his words echoed a simple truth:

“Freedom is never free. It is defended by those willing to stand when others would fall.”

The rally featured powerful messages from distinguished speakers, including:

• Jovita Neliupšienė, EU Ambassador, who reaffirmed the European Union’s steadfast support for Ukraine, declaring that Ukraine’s fight is Europe’s fight—for freedom, democracy, and human dignity.
• Mark Levin, representing the National Coalition Supporting Eurasian Jewry (NCSEJ), spoke of the importance of standing against authoritarian regimes that threaten global peace.
• Pavlo Grod, President of the World Ukrainian Congress, delivered a passionate call to action for the international community, emphasizing that “Ukraine defends the front lines of freedom for all of us. If Ukraine stands, freedom stands.”

The rally was not only a political and spiritual gathering but also a cultural celebration of Ukrainian identity. Renowned Ukrainian artist Oksana Bilozir moved the crowd with a beautiful rendition of her song “I Am Ukrainian.” Her voice carried words of encouragement, pride, and resilience, reminding everyone that to be Ukrainian is to carry within oneself the spirit of freedom, the love of land, and the will to resist injustice.

In his concluding remarks, Archbishop Daniel called upon all people of faith and goodwill to continue praying and standing with Ukraine:

“We pray for peace - but a peace founded on justice. We pray for love - but a love that does not compromise with evil. We pray for freedom - but a freedom protected by truth and courage. May God bless Ukraine with victory that brings peace, with justice that brings healing, and with freedom that brings life. For Ukraine defends not only her land but the very principles of justice and democracy for all. Slava Ukraini!”

The rally ended with a chorus of voices crying out:

“Slava Ukraini!” (Glory to Ukraine!).    “Heroyam Slava!” (Glory to the Heroes!)

The peaceful rally at the Lincoln Memorial reminded the world that Ukraine does not stand alone. The presence of Ukrainian Americans, American allies, and friends from around the globe demonstrated the power of unity, faith, and determination in the face of tyranny.

Ukraine has many friends who stand shoulder to shoulder with her people. Together, they send a message that will be heard around the world:

"Evil will not prevail. Justice will not be silenced. Freedom will not fall. Ukraine will endure. Ukraine will win." Slava Ukraini! Heroyam Slava! (Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!)

Beloved brothers and sisters, friends of Ukraine, defenders of truth and justice,

We gather here today - on these solemn steps, before the profound monument of President Abraham Lincoln - a man who stood for liberty, justice, and the indivisible right of every human being to live in freedom. His vision for a nation united under the banner of justice and equality echoes in our hearts today as we confront the tragic reality that freedom and peace are still denied to millions in Ukraine.

We are here to mark the third anniversary of the genocidal, full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation. Three years of pain. Three years of destruction. Three years of lives lost, families shattered, and a sovereign nation brutalized simply for choosing to live free.

As people of God, we stand united in prayer. We bow our heads, seeking the protection of the Almighty for the people of Ukraine.

We lift our hearts, praying for peace - but not just any peace - a just peace. We know that prayer alone is not enough. For God calls us not only to pray, but to act. We are His children, called to stand up for justice, to protect the innocent, and to fight for the rights of those who have no voice, who cannot act because oppression has bound their hands and stolen their homes.

Ukraine can no longer suffer!

We stand here, waving the blue and yellow flag of Ukraine - the blue sky of freedom, the golden fields of Ukrainian wheat. We remember the children torn away from their mothers, pushed across borders into Russia. We remember the young men dying to defend the soil their ancestors walked upon. We hear the weeping of mothers at the graves of their sons. This cannot continue.

We cannot make deals with evil! We must not compromise with aggression!

We must stand up - stand against evil, stand for justice, stand for peace - a peace based on equality and the ability to live life without the constant fear of war and loss. Peace that ensures that Ukraine’s future generations will grow up in a free and independent homeland - not one torn apart by foreign hands.

And so, today, I speak clearly to the world:

The true dictator of this ongoing, genocidal war sits in Moscow! Let there be no confusion. If someone dares to label the people of Ukraine or their political leaders as dictators, perhaps they need to open the pages of history once more. They must read again the volumes that teach us what dictatorship truly is - the suppression of voices, the denial of basic freedoms, the cold machinery of oppression that crushes the innocent.

Ukraine did not choose this war.   Ukraine was attacked!

Ukraine did not violate borders.   Ukraine defended its own!

Ukraine did not destroy lives.   Ukraine defends the right to life!

The actions of the political and military leaders of the Russian Federation have raped Ukraine - its land, its resources, its people. We must reconsider the language we use so that we do not betray the very principles of democracy, freedom, and justice that we claim to uphold.

Let us remember: Democracy is not only a political system - it is a moral commitment to stand against tyranny. It is a divine gift - God-given - to uphold peace, justice, equality, love, and compassion for the world in which we live.

And so today, in this new political reality, we call upon the leaders of the world, especially here in the United States of America:

Stand with Ukraine!    Do not make concessions to evil.

Do not give ground to those who grab land, destroy lives, and demand more.
Help Ukraine protect itself—not to fight—but to defend its people, its freedom, and its future.

Let it be known: Ukraine defends the front lines of freedom for us all. If we allow aggression to win there, it will spread. Justice demands action. Peace demands courage. Freedom demands sacrifice.

Let us stand together - Ukrainians and Americans, people of every nation who cherish liberty. Let our voices ring so loud that the halls of power cannot ignore us. Let our prayers rise so high that heaven itself will grant Ukraine the strength to endure and to win.

We believe in peace - but a peace with justice.
We believe in love - but a love that does not compromise with evil.
We believe in freedom - but a freedom protected by truth and courage.

May God bless Ukraine.

Мирний мітинг у Вашингтоні – відзначення третьої річниці невиправданого вторгнення Російської Федерації в Україну

Дорогі брати і сестри, друзі України, захисники правди і справедливості,

Ми збираємося сьогодні тут – на цих урочистих сходах, перед пам’ятником Президенту Аврааму Лінкольну – людині, яка виступала за свободу, справедливість і неподільне право кожної людини жити у свободі. Його бачення нації, об’єднаної під прапором справедливості та рівності, відлунює в наших серцях сьогодні, коли ми стикаємося з трагічною реальністю, що свобода та мир тепер не є реальністю для мільйонів в Україні.

Ми тут, щоб відзначити третю річницю геноциду, повномасштабного вторгнення Російської Федерації в Україну. Три роки болю. Три роки руйнування. Три роки втрачених життів, розбиті сім’ї та суверенна нація, яку знущалися лише за те, що вона вирішила жити вільно.

Як народ Божий, ми об’єднані в молитві. Ми схиляємо голови, шукаючи захисту у Всевишнього для народу України.

Ми піднімаємо наші серця, молячись за мир - але не будь-який мир - справедливий мир. Ми знаємо, що однієї лише молитви недостатньо. Бо Бог закликає нас не лише молитися, а й діяти. Ми Його діти, покликані відстоювати справедливість, захищати невинних і боротися за права тих, хто не має права голосу, хто не може діяти, тому що гноблення зв’язало їхні руки та вкрало їхні домівки.

Україна більше не може страждати!

Ми стоїмо тут, розвіваємо синьо-жовтий прапор України – синє небо волі, золоті поля української пшениці. Ми пам’ятаємо дітей, відірваних від матерів, вигнаних через кордони в Росію. Ми пам’ятаємо хлопців, які полягли, захищаючи землю, по якій ходили їхні предки. Ми чуємо плач матерів на могилах своїх синів. Так тривати не може.

Ми не можемо укладати угоди зі злом! Ми не повинні йти на компроміс з агресією!

Ми повинні встати — протистояти злу, відстоювати справедливість, відстоювати мир — мир, заснований на рівності та здатності жити без постійного страху війни та втрат. Мир, який гарантує, що майбутні покоління України виростуть на вільній і незалежній батьківщині, а не на розтерзаній чужими руками.

І тому сьогодні я чітко кажу світові:

Справжній диктатор цієї триваючої геноцидної війни сидить у Москві! Нехай не буде плутанини. Якщо хтось наважується наклеїти на народ України чи його політичних лідерів ярлик диктаторів, можливо, йому потрібно ще раз відкрити сторінки історії. Вони повинні ще раз прочитати томи, які навчають нас, що таке диктатура насправді - придушення голосів, заперечення основних свобод, холодна машина гноблення, яка розчавлює невинних.

Україна не вибирала цю війну. На Україну напали!

Україна кордонів не порушувала. Україна захистила своє!

Україна не знищувала життя. Україна відстоює право на життя!

Дії політичного та військового керівництва Російської Федерації зґвалтували Україну – її землю, її ресурси, її людей. Ми повинні переглянути мову, яку використовуємо, щоб не зраджувати самі принципи демократії, свободи та справедливості, які, як ми стверджуємо, підтримуємо.

Давайте пам’ятати: демократія – це не лише політична система – це моральний обов’язок протистояти тиранії. Це божественний дар, даний Богом, підтримувати мир, справедливість, рівність, любов і співчуття до світу, в якому ми живемо.

І тому сьогодні, в цій новій політичній реальності, ми закликаємо лідерів світу, особливо тут, у Сполучених Штатах Америки:

Будьте з Україною! Не йдіть на поступки злу.  Не поступайтеся тим, хто захоплює землю, руйнує життя та вимагає більшого.

Допоможіть Україні захистити себе — не воювати, а захистити свій народ, його свободу та майбутнє.

Збагнімо: Україна боронить передові свободи для всіх нас. Якщо ми дозволимо агресії перемогти там, вона пошириться. Справедливість вимагає дії. Мир вимагає мужності. Свобода вимагає жертв.

Станьмо разом – українці та американці, люди кожної нації, які цінують свободу. Нехай наші голоси лунають настільки голосно, що зали влади не зможуть нас проігнорувати. Нехай наші молитви підносяться так високо, щоб саме небо дало Україні сили вистояти і перемогти.

Ми віримо в мир, але в мир із справедливістю. Ми віримо в любов - але любов, яка не йде на компроміс зі злом. Ми віримо у свободу, але свободу, захищену правдою та мужністю.

Хай Бог благословляє Україну. Нехай Бог благословить Сполучені Штати Америки.

Нехай Бог благословить усіх, хто виступає за справедливість, свободу та мир.
