In a land shaken daily by air-raid sirens, drone attacks, and the relentless weight of fear, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA continues to stand as a beacon of Christlike compassion for the people and nation of Ukraine. Through the tireless ministry of Very Rev. Fr. Kostyantyn Kuznetsov and his devoted team, thousands of children, families, displaced persons, and elderly individuals continue to receive not only food and supplies - but hope, dignity, and the knowledge that they are not forgotten.

This winter, during the sacred season of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Fr. Kostyantyn and the volunteers of the Samar hub once again took to the roads of suffering Ukraine, delivering candy, fruit, food packets, and gifts sponsored by the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. These simple but deeply meaningful offerings became small sacraments of love - visible signs of God’s mercy in a time of immense human pain.

In cities like Pavlohrad, where day after day missiles and Shahed drones terrorize the population, children gather to receive their Saint Nicholas gifts. Their faces brighten with shy smiles as they unwrap candy and fruit - treasures in a time of scarcity. Yet behind those smiles lies another truth: the sadness in their eyes, the trauma of sounds they should never have heard, the loneliness of missing fathers who have been killed or mothers who have fled to seek safety.

Many of these children are victims of war, living far from their destroyed homes, attending makeshift schools, and carrying emotional wounds no child should bear. And yet, their resilience is astonishing. When they receive a gift, they hold it as though holding a piece of peace itself - something beautiful, gentle, and undeserved in a world that has taken so much from them.

It is precisely for these children, and for countless others like them, that the Church gives unconditionally.

As Archbishop Daniel noted while sending a note of gratitude to Fr. Kostyantyn and his wife Natalia: “Where a child suffers, Christ Himself suffers. And where a child smiles, even through sorrow, the Kingdom of God breaks into our wounded world.”

In Pavlohrad, the humanitarian team works under constant threat. Explosions shake the ground. Phones ring continuously with urgent pleas for help. Displaced families stand in long lines for food packages that may be the only sustenance they have for days.

Yet the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA stands with them.

“In every act of mercy, we offer not only bread for the body but strength for the heart,” Archbishop Daniel reflects. “Social ministry is not theory - it is love in motion.”

And so the work continues, even on the hardest days. Against all odds, and despite exhaustion, the volunteers keep serving.

After every church service in Samar, the spiritual worship naturally flows into social ministry. In the modest humanitarian hub of this Dnipro-region town, people arrive in waves - elderly pensioners, mothers with children, persons with disabilities, large families who have lost everything.

They come not only for bread, or hygiene items, or warm clothing - but because: “Everyone needs not only bread, but also a warm word, attention, and comfort.”

Fr. Kostyantyn and his volunteers treat each individual as Christ Himself, embracing them with patience, tenderness, and dignity. This is the Gospel in action.

The ministry of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA in Ukraine is not simply humanitarian work - it is a spiritual calling. It is the continuation of Christ’s mercy in a land scarred by sorrow. It is the living witness that faith without works is dead, and that true Christianity is measured by how we treat the most vulnerable.

Archbishop Daniel summarized this sacred truth: “When the Church touches a wounded soul, God Himself touches that soul through our hands. We are only instruments - He is the Healer.”

As the war drags on and suffering deepens, the need for compassion is greater than ever. Children still tremble at night. Families still stand in broken homes. Elderly individuals still shiver through winter without heat. And every day, somewhere in Ukraine, a child prays simply: “Lord, do not let us be forgotten.”

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA refuses to forget them. But this mission depends on the love, generosity, and prayers of the faithful.

Now, more than ever, we appeal to all people of good will: Continue helping us bring light into the darkness. Continue supporting the humanitarian ministry. Continue being the hands of Christ and the heart of Saint Nicholas for Ukraine’s suffering people.

Because as long as one child waits for kindness, as long as one family cries out for shelter, as long as one soul stands alone in the shadows - the Church must be there.

And by God’s grace, with your help, we will be.
